ABSTRACT

Disassociation can be understood on a surface level as daydreaming or "zoning out". More severe experiences of detaching from reality and the self are difficult to explain through common means. CYBERROT is a practice-led research project exploring how immersive and liminal affective technologies can transfer feelings associated with these altered states of mind. Utilizing virtual reality (VR), immersive installation practice, spatialized sound, and 3D digital environments, this project aims to blur the lines of reality, through a digital (un)reality.

Drawing from video game theory, post-cinema and affect theory, transhumanist understandings of technology and the human mind, theories on liminality and psychoanalysis combined, this practice-led research project is a deep-dive into the connections between human consciousness and technology and how immersive media can be a tool to communicate subjectivity.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

How can immersive technology be used to cause deep discomfort to promote critical thought around subjective experiences of reality?

How can sound enhance liminality to illicit feelings associated with altered states of consciousness?
